Making lemonade

After a 10-hour overnight train ride from D.C. to Boston, a 30-minute cab ride to the Boston airport, and a 6-hour wait at the airport because our flight was delayed due to bad weather in Newark, we were ready to get home to Costa Rica on Saturday and rest.  Unfortunately, when we finally landed in Newark and realized that we'd missed our connecting flight to San Jose (they only run twice a day), we decided to make lemonade out of lemons and turn our overnight layover in Newark into a 24-hour trip to NYC! What a treat.

Here we are at the airport in Boston, sitting at the same table we sat at nearly a year ago, waiting for our flight to Costa Rica! This is our last trip back here before we move back to the U.S. in July.

...and when we realized that we'd missed our flight from EWR to SJO.

Within 15 minutes of landing, I had used my iPhone to confirm that we'd missed our second flight and find three quotes for hotels in Manhattan (I'm a latecomer to the iPhone craze, but it came in really handy on this trip!).  We ended up staying at the Pod Hotel on 51 St and 2nd Avenue and had a wonderful visit with my old roommate, Heather! Here's a iPhone photo essay of our day in Manhattan.

On the 2 train heading to visit Heather.

My old neighborhood on the Upper West Side.

Roomies!
Wandering around Manhattan...

...and over to Columbus Circle where B and I used to work.

Heading back to Penn Station and the airport after a great visit. Goodbye, NYC!
