Betsy in Boston!

Betsy is awesome in many ways: awesome at Pit, awesomely kind, loyal and warm; awesome Christian woman; and not the least, an AWESOME photographer. Do ya get my drift? She's so young and so talented; God is going to do great things with her! I have no doubts. It's so fun to see someone so passionate about their job that it turns into a calling for them. Betsy, we love you, girlfriend!

We asked her to come and visit us in Boston, hanging out and taking some really fun pictures of the two of us to help memorialize our time here (and this time in our lives) as we don't know yet where we'll end up for medical school next year.

Check out the preview here: Photo by Betsy

(She's also entered this photo below into a contest; go here, click on #300 and help Betsy win!)

Moving on up....to Costa Rica!

Big news in the Blank house: in addition to officially putting in our application for medical school this week, we found out we're moving to Costa Rica for a year! We'll be moving in October and staying down there as long as we can until we move back to start med school in 2011.

Here's a map of the beautiful country so you can start to imagine where we'll be!

1,000 places to visit in Massachusetts

The Great Places in Massachusetts Commission (betcha can't guess what they do!) released a list of "1,000 Places to Visit in Massachusetts" earlier today.

I'll be busy this summer! Who can say R-O-A-D-T-R-I-P?

Oh what a weekend!

The warm weather - and the long holiday weekend - have inspired me to start checking off a few more things on my Boston to-do list, including:

Listening to the Boston Pops' 3rd of July preview concert

25 Things to do in New England for Less Than $25

I love to travel. But maybe what I love even more (well ok, maybe not more, but at least as much!) than traveling is getting a great deal while I'm doing it!

I was looking through these ideas from the Globe today and thought I'd share in case it inspires you to get out and explore your hometown, too!

Can I be a good boss?

Recently, I've been given the opportunity to become a manager on our team. So now, instead of simply managing myself, I'm also responsible for managing one other teammate. A good way to grow professionally but also quite challenging!

I came across this blog post on the Harvard Business Review and have been thinking about it over the past several days - "12 Things Good Bosses Believe."

1. I have a flawed and incomplete understanding of what it feels like to work for me.

2. My success — and that of my people — depends largely on being the master of obvious and mundane things, not on magical, obscure, or breakthrough ideas or methods.

3. Having ambitious and well-defined goals is important, but it is useless to think about them much. My job is to focus on the small wins that enable my people to make a little progress every day.

4. One of the most important, and most difficult, parts of my job is to strike the delicate balance between being too assertive and not assertive enough.

5. My job is to serve as a human shield, to protect my people from external intrusions, distractions, and idiocy of every stripe — and to avoid imposing my own idiocy on them as well.

6. I strive to be confident enough to convince people that I am in charge, but humble enough to realize that I am often going to be wrong.

7. I aim to fight as if I am right, and listen as if I am wrong — and to teach my people to do the same thing.

8. One of the best tests of my leadership — and my organization — is "what happens after people make a mistake?"

9. Innovation is crucial to every team and organization. So my job is to encourage my people to generate and test all kinds of new ideas. But it is also my job to help them kill off all the bad ideas we generate, and most of the good ideas, too.

10. Bad is stronger than good. It is more important to eliminate the negative than to accentuate the positive.

11. How I do things is as important as what I do.

12. Because I wield power over others, I am at great risk of acting like an insensitive jerk — and not realizing it.

Of course, if I'm looking for role models in management, I could always consider Michael Scott's wise words of advice: "I swore to myself if I ever got to walk around the room as manager, people would laugh as they saw me coming, and they'd applaud as I walked away."

Marriage is like "Love and War"

For those of you who are already fans of "Wild at Heart" or "Captivating," I am absolutely recommending the Eldredge's new book, "Love & War," even though I'm only 40 pages into it!

I was wandering around the Arnold Arboretum this weekend, journaling and praying and thinking about life stuff, when I started reading their book on marriage. This is a real, honest, thought-provoking book that will challenge you! It's already challenged me to rethink what marriage looks like - and how I can be a better wife to Brian.

"God uses marriage to bring us the possibility of the deepest joys in life; Satan tries to use it for destruction. Without you, your spouse will not become the man or woman that God intends him or her to be and the Kingdom of God will not advance as it is meant to advance. Your spouse plays the most vital role in your life. You play the most critical role in your spouse's life. No one will have a greater impact on your spouse's soul than you. No one has greater access to your spouse's heart than you. This is an enormous honor. Pause a moment; take a deep breath. Let that reality sink in a little deeper...You are only holy ground. You matter more than you thought."
